The blue ribbon campaign, initiated after Gilad, Udi and Eldad were kidnapped last year is continuing. Blue ribbons are available from the reception of the Beth Weizmann Community Centre, and we encourage all community members to continue wearing ribbons as a reminder and symbol of the 3 young men.

You can also provide a simple visual reminder of Gilad, Udi and Eldad every time you send an email by using the blue ribbon logo:

1 YEAR ON - WHERE ARE GILAD, ELDAD AND UDI?? AWARENESS CAMPAIGN WEEK 18 JUNE - 25 JUNE!!!!

The SZCV, together with the Melbourne community, will embark on a week of campaigning to highlight the fact that Israeli soldiers Gilad Shalit, Eldad Regev and Ehud (Udi) Goldwasser are still being held captive by terrorists, almost 1 year after being kidnapped from sovereign Israeli soil – Gilad from Israel’s border with Palestinian-controlled Gaza, and Udi and Eldad from the northern Lebanese border.

The week will culminate in a rally at Melbourne’s GPO (cnr Bourke and Elizabeth Streets) on Monday June 25 from 12.30 to 2pm. The rally has been planned to coincide with the day, 1 long year ago, that Gilad Shalit was kidnapped by Palestinian terrorists. Ehud (Udi) Goldwasser and Eldad Regev were kidnapped by Hizbollah terrorists just 18 days later, sparking the month-long Second Lebanon war.

The Solidarity Rally is an initiative of SZC youth and will be led by Victoria’s Zionist youth movements and AUJS, with the aim of engaging all segments of the community in the week-long campaign lead up to the event on June 25.

Events last weekend on Israel’s border with Gaza have again underlined the continued threat of cross-border raids and kidnapping by Palestinian terrorists. Local and international media outlets reported on the incident of a jeep, disguised as a press vehicle, attempting to infiltrate Israel at the Kissufim Crossing. Click here for the report from The Australian. Fortunately the IDF foiled the attack.

As the Jerusalem Post reported, Abu Ahmed, a spokesman for Islamic Jihad, confirmed that four gunmen broke through the Gaza border fence and attacked soldiers. "The aim of the operation was to withdraw with the soldier a captive," he said, "But the participation of Israeli helicopters prevented that." Gilad Shalit was kidnapped from Kerem Shalom, a mere 20 kilometres south of Saturday’s shootout.

Your support at the rally on Monday June 25 for Gilad, Ehud (Udi) and Eldad is crucial. Please forward the details onto as many people as possible and encourage them to attend as well.

The “Blue Ribbon” campaign initiated by SZC in response to the kidnapping of Gilad Shalit on June 25, 2006 is continuing. Lengths of blue ribbon have been kindly donated by Spotlight. Single ribbons are available from the Beth Weizmann reception. Please contact the SZC if you would like a particular quantity for your organization (safety pins are also provided).

As part of our campaign week to raise awareness throughout the community, we are utilising the “1 Year blue ribbon” email logo attached (and below). It is easy to use: just save it and insert it as “a picture” in your emails, together with your signature, etc. By doing so, you will provide a simple and effective reminder of the 3 young men still in captivity.

Finally, on May 10, a notice of motion was introduced by Sophie Mirabella in federal parliament in regards to the abduction of Gilad, Udi and Eldad and their safe return to Israel. Click here and scroll to page 136 to read it Look out for news of the formal motion.

More updates will follow as we approach next week’s awareness campaign and the rally on June 25.

Preparations underway for Solidarity Rally to mark 1-year anniversary of Israel's kidnapped soldiers - 14 May 2007

A Solidarity Rally to mark the 1 year anniversary of the kidnap of 3 Israeli soldiers is being planned for Monday June 25 between 12noon and 2pm in Melbourne’s CBD. This is 1 year to the day that Gilad Shalit was kidnapped into Gaza by Palestinian terrorists, and 18 days prior to Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev being kidnapped into Lebanon by Hizbollah terrorists. Both acts of terror were committed on Israel’s sovereign territory.

The Solidarity Rally has been initiated by the youth of SZC and will be led by Victoria’s Zionist youth movements and AUJS. The aim of the rally is to engage all segments of the community, in a week-long campaign in the lead up to the event and culminating on June 25. Alon Cassuto, State Zionist Council Youth Portfolio said, “We call on all community members to show their solidarity with Israel and the kidnapped soldiers on June 25. We are working on the rally with the aims of highlighting the fact that 1 year after being kidnapped by terrorists, Gilad, Ehud and Eldad are still being held against their will, their whereabouts and condition are unknown and that Israel seeks a peaceful solution to their return.”

There are 3 working groups organising the June 25 rally focusing on logistics, public relations and education. Interested community members are invited to be involved.

For further information or to be involved, please contact the SZC office on 9272-5544 or Alon Cassuto, SZC Youth Portfolio, details below.
